Air Charter Service Introduction – ELOGIS Group

Air Charter Service Introduction – ELOGIS Group

Hello!

We are ELOGIS Group, a leading logistics solution partner in the Middle East and Asia.

As we move past the weekend, the air has turned noticeably colder and the layers of clothing have surely gotten thicker.
We hope you are staying warm and taking care of your health during this crisp autumn season.

Today, we would like to introduce Air Charter services.

What Is an Air Charter?

An Air Charter is a widely used concept in international logistics and urgent transportation.
It refers to leasing (chartering) an aircraft—either the entire plane or part of its cargo/seat capacity—for the transportation of specific cargo or passengers.

Based on customer requirements, the whole aircraft or designated cargo space can be rented, operating on a custom schedule independent of regular flights.

Air charter service is not bound by standard airline schedules or pricing.
Instead, a shipper or freight forwarder leases full or partial capacity to operate a non-scheduled flight on their desired date and route.

In other words, rather than matching cargo to an airline’s timetable, an air charter builds a new timetable around the urgency and conditions of the shipment.

Types of Air Charters

Air charters are typically categorized into three types:

1. Full Charter

The shipper exclusively uses the entire aircraft capacity.

2. Split Charter

Multiple shippers share the cost by jointly leasing an aircraft on the same route and schedule.

3. ACMI Charter

Also known as a wet-lease, ACMI includes:

  • Aircraft

  • Crew

  • Maintenance

  • Insurance

This model secures the aircraft for a certain period and is often used during high-demand seasons.
It sits between a one-off charter and a mid- to long-term lease.

Conversely, Dry Lease (aircraft-only lease) requires the operator to independently manage flight approvals, crew, and maintenance.
Therefore, it is not typically used by general shippers.

When Is Air Charter Used?

Air charters are chosen most often in these situations:

  1. Time-critical cargo, such as emergency parts, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals needed to prevent production line shutdowns.

  2. Oversized, heavy, or hazardous cargo that cannot be loaded onto regular passenger belly space or scheduled freighters.

  3. Routes without direct scheduled flights, or poor connection options that lead to long lead times.

Additionally, charters become valuable alternatives during peak seasons, strikes, natural disasters, or whenever regular flight space becomes insufficient.

Benefits of Air Charter

Air charters offer clear advantages:

  • Fully customized departure/arrival times and routing

  • Dramatically reduced lead time

  • Entire cargo loaded on one aircraft, minimizing risks of loss, damage, or delays related to split shipments and transshipments

  • End-to-end quality control with tailored ground handling, security checks, and special handling for sensitive or dangerous goods

However, charter pricing can fluctuate significantly due to factors such as aircraft type, flight time, positioning flights, international flight permits, slot availability, ground handling, and security costs.
During peak seasons, aircraft availability can be the biggest challenge.

Key Considerations for Charter Planning

Unlike regular cargo transport, charter contracts often include charter-party style clauses, and accuracy in the planning phase is crucial.

Pre-charter preparation typically includes:

  • On-site surveys

  • Crane/trailer accessibility checks

  • Airport security review

  • Handling route simulation

To receive faster and more accurate quotations, it is essential to provide detailed information early, such as:

  • Exact dimensions and weight

  • Packaging photos and drawings

  • Temperature/impact limits

  • Dangerous goods documentation

  • Desired schedule, flexibilities, and restrictions

  • Delivery method and customs details

  • Availability of loading/unloading equipment at site

With proper preparation, air charter—despite its higher cost—can become the most reliable solution when time is money.
